Scoping a quote-form project for a moving company: what I look at first

When a moving company asks for a website, I skip the page list and start with one question: what happens after someone presses Submit?

That answer sets most of the cost.

Here is the checklist I run through before estimating:

  1. Form depth. A short contact form, a multi-step quote form, or a calculator. These are three different builds, not three sizes of the same one.
  2. Routing. Who is notified, how fast, and through what channel. An instant email or text to the estimator beats a shared inbox checked twice a day.
  3. Auto-reply. A confirmation that states when someone will call reduces duplicate submissions.
  4. Data handoff. If the company already uses a moving CRM, the form should feed it. That adds integration time.
  5. Location pages. I ask how many areas they actually serve and what they can say about each one. Thin, copy-pasted city pages are not worth the build time.
  6. Mobile behavior. The call button must be reachable without scrolling and the form must fit a phone screen.

On pricing, I see freelancer builds land around $2,500 to $10,000 depending on how far down this list the project goes. Agencies commonly charge 1.5 to 2.5 times that for the same scope.

For most local movers I recommend the multi-step form over a calculator. It collects what the estimator needs and costs far less to build and maintain.

I wrote up the full cost breakdown with three sample budgets and seven questions to ask any developer before signing:
