What Does WordPress Maintenance Actually Cost? (And What Should Be Included)

Most WordPress maintenance quotes range anywhere from $30/month to $400+/month for what sounds like the same service on paper. Here's what actually separates the tiers, from a developer who runs maintenance plans for real client sites.

The Real Pricing Breakdown

  • Basic ($50-$100/mo) — core/theme/plugin updates + automated backups. This is baseline insurance, nothing proactive.
  • Standard ($100-$250/mo) — adds malware scanning, firewall management, and a small monthly allowance for minor fixes. This is the tier most small business and simple WooCommerce sites actually need.
  • Premium ($250-$500/mo) — adds staging-site testing before updates go live, performance monitoring, and same-day emergency response.

What Gets Left Out of Most Plans

Maintenance plans almost never cover new feature development, redesigns, or recovering an already-hacked site — those get quoted separately. If a provider bundles "unhacking your site" into a $50/month plan, that's a red flag, not a bargain.

The Real Question to Ask Providers

Not "how much does it cost" but: what happens when an update breaks something? Providers who test on staging first and can roll back instantly are doing this properly. Providers who push updates straight to a live site and hope are not.
