The cost gap. Tom’s Hardware reports DeepSeek V4-Flash performs well on intelligence and agentic tasks at much lower cost than leading Western models.
The catch: it hallucinates more than the proprietary competitors, so match the model to the task.
The architecture that follows from this is routing. Send cheap, high-volume work to open models and keep a frontier model for the hard 10%.
Open weights bring governance questions: data residency, licensing and supply-chain risk, especially for models built abroad.
