The escalation-on-low-confidence pattern is right, but the confidence score itself is the weak link. Small models can be confidently wrong on out-of-distribution inputs, so we kept a sample of escalations under human review to check calibration. Without that loop the routing quietly degrades.

Trying the small model first and escalating on low confidence is how I'd start too, and the escalation rate is the right number to watch. I'd pair it with a second one: replay a small daily sample of the calls that did not escalate through the frontier model and track how often the two agree. When agreement drops on one task type, that's the signal to move it back up a tier.

Over 18 years I've architected cloud-native platforms across agri-food, SaaS, leisure, and fitness — most recently a distributed, event-driven system on Azure handling 1M+ transactions a day, where I cut end-to-end latency by 90% using Azure Service Bus and Functions.
What I bring:
• Architecture — event-driven microservices, distributed systems, and solution design on Azure, with the ability to translate messy domain requirements into platforms that hold up under load.
• Engineering leadership — I've led teams of 10+ through platform rebuilds, agile transformations, and large-scale cloud migrations, mentoring senior and principal engineers (several promoted under me).
• DevSecOps — I embed CI/CD, OWASP-aligned security, and automated testing into the lifecycle, compressing release cycles from weeks to a day and cutting production incidents. Show less
