Power Platform: build without starting with 5,000 lines of code

Real developers must build everything from scratch.

I used to think that too.

As CS students, we're often taught that writing more code automatically makes us better developers.

But in the real world, the goal is rarely to write the most code.

The goal is to solve a problem.

That's why I think every junior developer should understand the difference between:

✅ Building software
and

✅ Delivering value

Low-code platforms are often dismissed as "not real development," but that's an oversimplification.

They can be extremely useful for:

🔹 Prototypes
Need to validate an idea quickly? A low-code solution can help you test concepts in hours instead of weeks.

🔹 Internal Tools
Many companies need simple employee portals, approval systems, tracking apps, and forms. These don't always require a full custom application.

🔹 Workflow Automation
Automating repetitive tasks between emails, spreadsheets, databases, and business systems can save countless hours.

🔹 Dashboards & Reporting
Sometimes stakeholders just need visibility into data, not a completely custom analytics platform.

🔹 Simple Business Applications
Leave requests, equipment tracking, visitor management, inventory checklists, and similar use cases can often be delivered much faster with low-code approaches.

That said, traditional programming remains incredibly valuable.

You still need software engineering skills for:

• Complex business logic

• APIs and backend services
• Security-critical solutions
• Advanced AI and data workloads

In fact, developers who understand both coding and low-code often become more effective because they know when to build and when to simplify.

The best developers are not the ones who write the most code.

They're the ones who choose the right tool for the problem.
