Every year, smartphone manufacturers take the stage to announce a breakthrough in display technology. One year, the new model is “four times more shatter resistant” than its predecessor; the next, it is “three times more scratch resistant”. While these claims are technically true, they often obscure a fundamental reality of material science: shatter resistance and scratch resistance are inversely related.

The Physics of the “Slider”
To understand why your phone screen still breaks or scratches despite decades of innovation, you have to look at the material’s properties as a “slider”.

Hardness vs. Brittleness: To make glass more scratch resistant, you have to make it harder. However, increasing hardness also makes the material more brittle, which makes it significantly more susceptible to shattering upon impact.

Softness vs. Durability: Conversely, to make glass shatter resistant, you make it “softer” or more flexible. While this allows the screen to absorb the energy of a drop without breaking, it makes the surface much easier to scratch with everyday materials like sand or keys.

Because it is nearly impossible to dramatically improve both metrics simultaneously, manufacturers are forced to pick one to optimize for each generation.

The Marketing Cycle
If you look closely at the history of products like Corning’s Gorilla Glass, a clever pattern emerges. Instead of a single upward trend of “better glass,” there are actually two alternating curves. One year, the marketing focus is on drop protection; the next, it shifts to scratch resistance. This “stacking” of headlines creates the illusion of constant, linear progress in both categories, even though the glass is simply pivoting between two different priorities.

Even Apple’s proprietary Ceramic Shield follows this logic. The first generation was marketed as four times more shatterproof, while the second iteration focused on being three times more scratch resistant. Despite these branded names, the physical limitations remain: at the end of the day, it is still glass. Because sand which is often composed of quartz is harder than glass, your screen will likely still show scratches at a level six or seven on the Mohs scale.

It’s Not Just the Glass
Another misleading element of these “shatterproof” claims is that they often attribute durability solely to the glass itself, ignoring the structural design of the phone.

When a phone like the iPhone 12 showed improved drop test results, much of that durability came from its design shift back to flat edges and square sides. Curved glass is inherently more exposed and vulnerable to impact than glass protected by thick, flat bezels. By changing the shape of the display and the material of the frame, manufacturers can achieve better shatter results while letting the glass take all the credit in the marketing slides.

What Actually Changes?
While we wait for a “magic” material that can be both diamond-hard and rubber-flexible, manufacturers focus on “invisible” improvements that don’t always make the headlines:

  1. Oleophobic coatings that reject fingerprints and make the screen feel smoother.

  2. Anti-reflective coatings that improve outdoor visibility.

The Bottom Line
The next time you see a keynote slide boasting about a “revolutionary” new glass, remember that the laws of physics haven’t changed. While the chemistry is constantly being tweaked, the fundamental trade-off remains. Whether you prioritize a screen that won’t crack or one that stays pristine and scratch-free, you are likely only getting one or the other. Because, despite the clever branding, glass is still glass.
