AI is increasingly used in ICS and OT environments for anomaly detection, predictive maintenance, and threat response—but without governance, it can introduce new risks. AI governance in OT cybersecurity ensures that AI systems are safe, transparent, resilient, and aligned with operational priorities where availability and safety come first.

Key pillars of Governance AI for ICS/OT:

Safety-first design: AI decisions must never override physical safety or process integrity.

Explainability: Operators and engineers must understand why an alert or action was generated.

Human-in-the-loop: AI supports operators; it does not autonomously control critical processes.

Data integrity: Training and runtime data must be protected from manipulation and poisoning.

Lifecycle management: Continuous validation as OT processes, assets, and threats evolve.

Segmentation & least privilege: AI systems should follow strict OT network and access controls.

Compliance alignment: Map AI use to IEC 62443, NIST CSF, ISA/IEC, and emerging AI regulations.

Bottom line:
In OT, governance is not bureaucracy, it is risk control. Well-governed AI strengthens detection and resilience; poorly governed AI becomes another attack surface.
