Comparison: Universal Import vs. Plaid/Yodlee

Plaid and broker APIs give real-time data—and a long-term liability. Here's how Universal CSV import compares.

Dimension Universal LLM Import (CSV) Plaid / Broker APIs
Data ownership User holds CSV Provider holds data graph
Integration surface File upload + mapping OAuth, APIs, webhooks
New "integration" Often zero code (heuristic/LLM)New adapter + maintenance
Offline Parse works offline Needs network
Failure mode Bad mapping → user corrects API down → no data
Maintenance Synonym/LLM updates API versions, deprecations
Cost Optional LLM per file Per-API or per-call fees
Compliance No broker API ToS in the path Provider ToS, data use

When to choose CSV over API

Choose the Universal CSV path when: (1) You want to avoid dependency on broker or aggregator APIs. (2) You prioritize data sovereignty: the user holds the file and the product never stores the full trade history on your servers. (3) You need to support a long tail of brokers without shipping a new parser for each. (4) You want offline-capable import. Choose API integrations when you need real-time or automatic sync and have the engineering and compliance capacity to maintain multiple API integrations.

Hybrid strategy

Many products offer both: API for users who want automatic sync, and CSV for users who want control and for brokers that do not have an API. The Universal path makes the CSV option robust and first-class rather than a fallback. When an API goes down or a broker is deprecated, the fallback message can say "Export your data as CSV and use our Smart Import"—the same pipeline that supports unknown brokers also supports continuity when an API is unavailable.
