Have you ever wished you could bypass the limitations of heavy operating systems and use the web browser—the world's most accessible runtime—to directly control hardware or run industrial dashboards?

That's the mission of GnokeStation.

It's a Web Operating System (WebOS) and Human-Machine Interface (HMI) Framework built on a simple idea: transform any device with a modern browser—even low-spec or "obsolete" hardware—into a powerful, clean, and highly customizable computer.

A Platform Built for Modularity
GnokeStation isn't a traditional desktop clone; it's a minimal shell designed to host and manage independent applications, drivers, and plugins. Think of it as a blank canvas where every tool you add is a self-contained module.

This approach is key to its performance and versatility. We keep the core system tiny (less than 700KB) and load specialized functionality only when you need it.

We invite you to explore the structure that makes this possible:
This architecture allows us to separate the desktop shell from the complex logic needed to interact with the real world.

Showcase: Web Apps Driving Hardware
The power of GnokeStation is its ability to integrate custom control interfaces directly into the desktop environment. Here are a couple of examples of the types of modules already running on the platform:

  • The Car HMI: A beautiful, responsive dashboard designed for in-vehicle systems. It shows how the platform can handle complex, modern user interfaces that require instant visual feedback, ready to connect to any backend API you provide.

  • WLED Controller: A driver that uses standard Web APIs to communicate with and control WLED devices (Wi-Fi-enabled LED strips). You get a polished desktop window for real-time adjustments of power, brightness, and color—proving that the browser can reliably manage real-world devices.

We've already established foundational connectivity for industrial applications, including support for protocols like Modbus TCP for communication with PLCs and factory equipment.

Call to Action: Bring Your Web App to the Desktop
GnokeStation is an open-source project and its greatest strength will be the applications the community builds for it.
If you are a developer who:

  • Has built a neat web application, tool, or dashboard that currently runs in a standard browser tab.

  • Uses Web APIs (REST, WebSockets, etc.) to fetch data or control services.
You can easily package and integrate it into the GnokeStation desktop environment. Imagine your project running alongside others, fully managed by a window manager, on any low-end device in the world.

Ready to contribute or want to build a new driver? We're looking for talented developers to help expand our module ecosystem!

What web tool or API are you currently working with that you'd love to see run as a dedicated desktop app on GnokeStation?
