We checked 600 real searches and traced about 4,300 cited passages back to the exact spot on the page they came from.

67% came from the top 30% of the page in Google AI Overviews, and 60% in Google AI Mode.

Kevin Indig's research found the same pattern for ChatGPT, but weaker: 44% of its citations come from the top 30%.

Takeaway: don't bury the lead. Put the answers you want AI to cite in the top 30% of your pages.
