On Sunday, September 20, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) announced that its fifth-generation memory-chip technology platform had entered mass production. The announcement was made at the World Manufacturing Convention in Hefei, China.
The platform produces DRAM, also known as dynamic random-access memory, which serves as working memory in electronic devices, including smartphones.
CXMT says it has reduced the spacing of key features in the memory-storage portion of its chips to 11.95 nanometres. The company used a manufacturing technique called quadruple patterning, which involves repeating patterning steps to create finer structures.
Alongside the announcement, CXMT unveiled two 24-gigabit LPDDR5X memory products manufactured using the new platform.
LPDDR5X is a low-power DRAM technology primarily used in smartphones and other portable electronic devices.
According to CXMT:
- Its new products can store 50% more data than its previous equivalent products.
- The platform can produce at least 50% more gross chip dies per wafer than its fourth-generation platform, using an 8-gigabit chip as the baseline.
- Gross dies per wafer refers to the potential number of chips produced from a wafer before defective units are excluded.
- The two new products are already in mass production and are available in two package formats.
