Interesting idea. Markdown polished letterhead without fighting DOCX sounds really useful. Does the engine handle custom templates easily.
The .docx Era Is Over: Why I Built an Open-Source Letterhead Engine for the Markdown & AI Age

Good question! To be completely candid: it is deliberately opinionated rather than an open canvas.
The tool was born out of a very practical need I had for printing real-world letterhead documents without wasting hours in design tools. So instead of giving you 50 sliders to center the logo, adjust 2px offsets, or micromanage bounding boxes, it intentionally locks in a proven, publication-grade layout standard:
Header band on page 1 (logo/wordmark + metadata)
Running header on inner pages
Banking/legal footer pinned to the last page
You customize your identity—accent colors, margins, fonts, metadata, banking info, and choice between a logo, an editorial wordmark, or a pre-printed background sheet—via letterhead.yaml. But the structural layout itself stays disciplined.
In a way, preventing the temptation to "go fancy" with thousands of layout settings is the point: the whole goal is to stop fiddling with 3mm offsets at midnight and just get a clean, client-ready PDF out the door.
That said, because the template compiles via Typst under the hood, anyone who genuinely wants to fork it and build a completely custom layout structure can easily hack the underlying Typst template.

@[buildbasekit] The trauma is so real 😂 You hit Backspace once, an image gets banished to the shadow realm, and suddenly your 2-page invoice becomes an 8-page piece of modern art.
Markdown really is therapy for that. The only hurdle left was that awkward moment where you have to send it to a client who expects crisp, corporate stationery. That exact gap was why I built Mela Letterhead—so you can stay in your peaceful plain-text bubble, run a quick build, and let Typst put on the formal suit (first-page header, running headers, last-page banking footer) without a single jumping logo.
Long live plain text, and may your margins forever stay where you put them!
