I didn't set out to build the ultimate productivity platform, and I certainly didn't intend to disrupt the SaaS industry. I just wanted to stop paying monthly subscriptions for tools built for project managers instead of freelancers.
For years, I found myself stacking apps on top of each other—Asana for tasks, Everhour for time tracking—navigating complex interfaces only to use about ten percent of what I was actually paying for. In August 2025, out of pure frustration, I decided to sketch out a self-hosted alternative.
For a year, MelaFreelance was my silent partner, running in the background of my daily work. This August, during the quiet of the summer holidays, I finally added the missing pieces. The app is now complete—not because it has every feature in the world, but because it finally has exactly the ones I actually use.
Escaping the Subscription Bloat
When you work alone, you don't need team permissions, complex Gantt charts, or enterprise cloud syncing. You simply need to know what you are doing, how long it took, and whether you have been paid for it.
MelaFreelance is a quiet departure from the multi-tool chaos. It is a single, self-hosted space where the friction between tracking work and getting paid is entirely removed. Because it runs on my own server, I own the data. There is no cloud, no telemetry, and best of all, no monthly fees.
A Flow Built for Solo Work
The app is built on a modern stack (Laravel 12, Inertia 2, Vue 3, TypeScript, and Tailwind 4), but its philosophy is stubbornly simple. The hierarchy matches the reality of freelance work: Clients → Projects → Tasks.

The summer finalization wasn't about adding more features; it was about refining the daily experience and removing friction.
The Always-On Timer: A running timer sits in the app header on every page. I can navigate to my dashboard or reports without ever losing sight of the clock.
A Contextual Memory: If I start a new task, the previous one automatically stops and banks its time. If I pause, the timer remembers my place, offering a quick "Resume" button.
The Unified Task Canvas: Clicking a task opens a single workspace where I can edit notes, adjust the tracked time, and securely drag-and-drop private attachments (like PDFs or Figma links) that never leave my server.
A Realistic Payment Ledger: Freelance payments are rarely a simple yes/no checkbox. MelaFreelance lets me record deposits and part-payments as they arrive, automatically calculating what is still outstanding until the project is fully paid and sealed.
