Dario Amodei Calls for Slower AI Development
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei called for slowing the pace of advanced artificial intelligence development in a statement posted on X on Saturday, citing the risks arising from the rapid development of advanced AI.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have also supported slowing the pace at which the capabilities of advanced AI systems are increasing. However, US President Donald Trump rejected the demand, saying that highly negative forces regarding artificial intelligence are exaggerating the risks.
Donald Trump said that the United States is ahead of China in artificial intelligence and is the most advanced country in the world, adding that whichever country succeeds in AI will gain the advantage.
Global Times Accuses Anthropic of a “Cold War” Strategy
The Chinese state-backed newspaper Global Times criticized Anthropic in an editorial, saying that the company has adopted a “Cold War” strategy against China in the name of AI safety risks.
According to the Chinese editorial, the real purpose of Dario Amodei’s article is to restrict China’s AI development through technological barriers and regulatory monopolies, maintain Washington’s monopoly over advanced technology, and keep China outside the global AI governance system.
Global Times described this as a “silent AI Cold War” and said that such an approach is hypocritical and short-sighted.
The Chinese newspaper said that any attempt to exclude China from global AI innovation would significantly increase the cost of experimentation and testing in AI development worldwide, as well as the risks of losing control.
AI Development Becomes Part of US-China Competition
According to reports in international media, the call to slow the pace of AI development is no longer only a matter of safety but has become part of the growing geopolitical and technological competition between the United States and China.
A major meeting expected in September between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping may also discuss safety risks associated with advanced artificial intelligence.
US Lawmakers Push for AI Oversight
Meanwhile, following alarming warnings from two Anthropic researchers about potential threats to human survival in the near future from rapidly advancing AI, US lawmakers are calling for new legislation to oversee artificial intelligence systems.
Dario Amodei has clarified that he does not support completely freezing AI training or technological development.
He has also proposed a three-point system under which Anthropic would continuously place third-party evaluators within its advanced AI models, giving them access to relevant tools and internal risk-assessment processes.
