Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella Backs a More Careful Approach to AI Development
The debate over the rapid development of artificial intelligence continues to grow. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has now joined the discussion, arguing that increasingly advanced AI systems must remain under human control and that development should be carefully paced.
AI Must Remain Under Human Control
Nadella said that any pursuit of superintelligence should be based on a simple principle: if AI is not helping humanity and cannot remain under human control, it is not worth pursuing.
Rather than calling for a complete halt to AI development, he supports a more deliberate pace that allows safety and alignment measures to keep up with rapidly improving capabilities.
Support for Independent AI Evaluators
Nadella also welcomed the idea of independent evaluators monitoring advanced AI systems. This follows Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei’s recent proposal to give third-party evaluators ongoing access to AI systems so they can assess safety measures and report potential incidents.
Microsoft is also preparing a Code of Conduct for its first-party AI models, with the aim of establishing principles for safer and more responsible AI development.
Another Major Voice in the AI Slowdown Debate
Nadella’s position comes shortly after Amodei called for the AI industry to slow the pace of frontier AI development. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Elon Musk have also supported the broader idea of deliberately pacing AI progress and strengthening safety measures.
With Microsoft now joining this conversation, the debate is becoming broader across the AI industry: the goal may not be to stop AI progress, but to ensure that increasingly powerful systems remain safe, useful and under meaningful human control.
