Important reminder: a permissive robots.txt doesn’t equal free use. It’s just crawler guidance, not a copyright waiver. Access ≠ authorization and respecting intellectual property is still non‑negotiable.
A permissive robots.txt is not a licence

@[Gift Balogun] Exactly. That separation is the whole thing for me.
access != authorization != intent
robots.txt can tell me whether crawling is welcome, a licence can tell me what reuse is permitted, and sometimes the author’s stated intent gives me an additional boundary I still want to respect even when the legal position might be more permissive.
The mistake I made was treating “we can fetch it” as if it were close enough to “we can use it.” It really isn’t.
For anything that may eventually support a commercial product, I now want the reuse permission to be explicit before the source ever enters the pipeline. 🔍🔐

Show moreCloud & AI Security Engineer building production systems where AI, cloud infrastructure, and security meet. I work with Python, AWS, FastAPI, LLMs, RAG, AI agents, MCP, Docker, Kubernetes, and CI/CD. My approach is security by design: threat modeling, OWASP, adversarial testing, observability, and automated security gates. I build, break, measure, and harden systems before they reach production. ?? Show less
