Airtel 5G ODU vs MTN 5G ODU: My Honest Experience After Weeks of Testing in Nigeria

The arrival of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) in Nigeria promised something many Nigerians have waited years for—fiber-like internet without laying cables. Airtel and MTN both launched their Outdoor Units (ODUs), promising fast, reliable internet for homes and businesses.

On paper, both products look impressive.

In reality, your experience depends almost entirely on one thing:

Is there actually a 5G tower serving your location?

After spending time with the Airtel 5G ODU, analyzing signal information, checking neighboring cell towers, comparing coverage maps, and monitoring speed tests across different times of the day, here's what I found.


First Things First: A 5G Router Doesn't Mean You'll Get 5G

This is probably the biggest misconception.

Many people assume:

Buy a 5G router = Get 5G internet.

Unfortunately, that's not how mobile networks work.

A 5G router can only connect to a 5G cell if:

  • there is a nearby 5G tower,
  • the tower has available capacity,
  • your signal quality is good enough,
  • and the operator has actually deployed 5G in your area.

Otherwise...

The router simply falls back to LTE (4G/4G+).

That is exactly what happened in my case.


My Experience with the Airtel 5G ODU

I live in a very popular part of Port Harcourt.

Based on how developed the area is, I naturally assumed Airtel would already have 5G coverage.

So I purchased the Airtel 5G ODU because I urgently needed better internet for work.

From the very first day...

I have never connected to Airtel 5G.

Not once.

Even after forcing the router to:

  • 5G (NSA)
  • Automatic 5G

It still connects as:

4G+

Every single time.


Looking Deeper into the Router

After checking the engineering statistics inside the router, several things became obvious.

The router reports:

  • RSRP around -72 dBm
  • RSRQ around -4 dB
  • SINR around 12 dB

These are actually respectable LTE signal values.

The router also reports only 4G neighboring cells, while the 5G neighboring cell list remains empty, indicating that no usable Airtel 5G cell is available at the installation point.

The router is healthy.

The signal is healthy.

The missing piece is simply:

No Airtel 5G cell to connect to.

That means the router is behaving exactly like a premium 4G router.


The Marketing Problem

This is where I believe expectations and reality differ.

The device is heavily marketed as a 5G router.

Technically, that statement is correct.

But many buyers interpret it as:

"Buy this router and you'll enjoy 5G."

That is not guaranteed.

If Airtel has not deployed 5G where you live, then what you've purchased is effectively an expensive LTE router.

That doesn't necessarily make the product bad.

It just means coverage matters far more than the hardware.


The eSIM Surprise

One interesting discovery was that the ODU internally uses an embedded SIM (eSIM) to communicate with Airtel's network.

However, after opening the device and inspecting it carefully, it also appears capable of accepting a physical SIM card from the supported operator.

Testing with a physical SIM produced essentially the same result.

The limitation wasn't the SIM.

It was simply the lack of an available Airtel 5G signal.


Real World Performance

This is where things became frustrating.

During quiet periods of the day:

  • browsing is fine
  • YouTube works
  • video calls are usable
  • normal office work is okay

Once daytime traffic increases...

everything changes.

Uploading documents becomes noticeably slower.

Cloud backups take much longer.

Large software downloads become inconsistent.

Remote desktop sessions start feeling sluggish.

If your work depends heavily on the internet software development, cloud infrastructure, media uploads, or large file transfers you'll quickly notice the limitations.

The network isn't unusable.

It's just not delivering what most people expect from a product carrying the "5G" label.


Then I Compared It with MTN

This is where things became interesting.

Using the official coverage maps from both operators, one thing becomes immediately noticeable.

MTN's 5G footprint appears significantly broader across many urban locations than Airtel's.

In several cities including parts of Port Harcourt MTN has deployed more visible 5G coverage than Airtel.

That doesn't mean MTN has perfect coverage.

It simply means your chances of actually connecting to 5G are generally higher.

If your location falls within MTN's active 5G coverage, the experience is much closer to what people expect from fixed wireless broadband.

Users typically report:

  • higher download speeds
  • lower latency
  • better upload performance
  • more consistent remote work experience

Night time performance is usually even better because fewer users are competing for bandwidth.


Why Time of Day Matters

One thing many reviews fail to mention is network congestion.

Mobile towers have finite capacity.

At around:

  • 8 AM
  • lunchtime
  • evening
  • weekends

everyone is online.

People are:

  • watching YouTube
  • attending meetings
  • gaming
  • downloading updates
  • streaming Netflix
  • using TikTok

Everyone is competing for the same radio resources.

This explains why a speed test at 2 AM can look incredible while the exact same location performs much worse at 2 PM.

When reviewing any mobile broadband service, always ask:

What time was the speed test performed?

Without that context, speed tests can be misleading.


Mounting the ODU Correctly

Most people install these devices on a wall because it's easy.

Personally, I think that's leaving performance on the table.

Since these outdoor units rely on omnidirectional antennas to receive radio signals, they perform best when they have the clearest possible line of sight to nearby towers.

A better installation would be similar to how people install:

  • GOtv antennas
  • StarTimes antennas
  • TV aerials

Mounting the ODU higher on a pole or mast can reduce obstructions from buildings and trees and often improves signal quality.

Even small improvements in RSRP and SINR can translate into noticeably better throughput.


Before Buying Any 5G ODU

Don't buy based on advertising alone.

Instead, ask these questions first:

  • Does my area actually have 5G coverage?
  • Which operator has deployed more towers nearby?
  • Can someone nearby confirm they're getting a genuine 5G connection?
  • What are the speeds during peak hours not just at midnight?
  • Is the router connecting to NR (5G), or is it staying on LTE?

Doing this homework can save you a lot of disappointment.


My Verdict

The Airtel 5G ODU isn't a bad device.

In fact, the hardware appears capable.

The problem is that hardware alone cannot create a 5G connection.

Without sufficient Airtel 5G deployment in your location, the router behaves much like a high-end 4G+ router. That was my experience in Port Harcourt, and the signal information from the router supported that conclusion.

MTN currently seems to have a stronger 5G rollout in many urban areas, giving its ODU a better chance of delivering the performance buyers expect. However, this doesn't mean MTN will outperform Airtel everywhere coverage varies by neighborhood, and the only reliable predictor is the availability of a nearby 5G cell.

My advice is simple:

Don't buy a 5G router because it says "5G" on the box. Buy it because your location actually has usable 5G coverage.

A few minutes spent checking the official coverage maps and talking to people who already use the service in your neighborhood can save you money, frustration, and unrealistic expectations.

If you're fortunate enough to be within a well-served 5G area, these ODUs can be an excellent alternative to fiber. If not, you're likely paying a premium for what will effectively be a 4G+ experience until more 5G sites are deployed.
