WordPress vs Wix: Which Actually Costs More for a Small Business Website?

Comparing WordPress and Wix from a developer's perspective, most business owners underestimate two things: Wix's app marketplace subscriptions stack up fast, and there's no clean way to export a Wix site if you outgrow it later — a developer ends up rebuilding from scratch.

WordPress's real cost lives in hosting + setup, not the software itself, which is free and open-source. Once built, though, you own the code outright — no forced tier upgrades, no vendor lock-in.

Good breakdown. I think long term costs matter more than the initial setup.

@[Next Big Creative] Totally agree — the sticker price comparison is where most people stop, but it's the wrong comparison to make. A $16/mo Squarespace plan vs a $5/mo WordPress host looks like Squarespace wins, until you factor in 2-3 years of growth, transaction fees on ecommerce, and the cost of migrating off a closed platform if you outgrow it. I usually tell clients to price out where they expect to be in year 2, not just month 1.
