I Built a Macro Calculator That Also Shows You What to Eat
Most macro calculators do a good job of answering one question:
How many calories, grams of protein, carbs, and fat should I aim for?
But after getting those numbers, I kept coming back to another question:
What should someone actually eat to work toward those targets?
That's why I built Daily Macro Calculator, a free web tool that connects estimated nutrition targets with sample meals.
What it does
The workflow is intentionally simple:
- Enter your age, height, weight, activity level, and goal.
- Get an estimated daily calorie and macro target.
- See breakfast, lunch, and dinner suggestions with ingredient portions.
There are also a few details I wanted to get right.
Targets and meal totals are separate.
A daily target of 2,400 calories doesn't mean the suggested meals will add up to exactly 2,400. The actual food totals come from the selected ingredients and portions.
Food weights are clearly labeled.
Raw chicken and cooked chicken aren't interchangeable measurements. The same applies to dry rice and cooked rice.
Meal changes should be predictable.
If someone wants a different dinner, they can explore alternatives without unnecessarily changing the rest of the day.
The main experience stays simple.
Instead of presenting every advanced setting on the homepage, I kept the core flow focused on calculating targets and seeing practical food suggestions.
For users who want more control, there are also separate TDEE, protein, macro ratio, and meal-splitting calculators.
What I learned building it
The formula isn't the hardest part of a nutrition calculator.
The harder problem is connecting estimated numbers with food data, realistic portions, and an interface that doesn't overwhelm the user.
I'm also trying to be clear about the limitations. These are estimates and sample meals, not individualized medical nutrition advice.

I'd especially appreciate feedback on two things:
1. Is the transition from macro targets to meal suggestions clear?
2. Would you prefer more meal alternatives, or fewer choices with a simpler interface?
I'm interested in improving the actual experience rather than just adding more settings.
