Canada Ended the Clock Change. Your Future Meetings May Have Other Plans.

Several Canadian jurisdictions just stopped falling back. Software teams should treat that as a time-zone release, not a lifestyle update.

British Columbia now uses UTC-7 throughout the year. Alberta and the Northwest Territories use UTC-6. Manitoba uses UTC-5. Yukon has held UTC-7 since 2020. Ontario and much of the country still follows the usual seasonal schedule, so Canada has not simplified time. It has simply given the support matrix more personality.

This matters because a timestamp and a future appointment are different things.

2027-01-15T14:00:00Z describes an instant. "09:00 every weekday in Vancouver" describes a local rule. If the application stored only the calculated UTC instant and discarded America/Vancouver, it has also discarded the information needed to recalculate the rule after time-zone law changes.

That is how an innocent recurring meeting turns into an hour-long forensic exercise with a calendar vendor, an old container image and someone asking whether PST means Pacific Standard Time, Pacific Summer Time, or Please Stop Talking.

The IANA Time Zone Database shipped separate 2026 releases for B.C., Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Manitoba. Those rules then need to arrive in operating systems, containers, runtimes, client devices and calendar services. Microsoft has told Outlook users affected by the Canadian changes to switch to the new zone and verify or migrate future recurring meetings. That is a decent indication that "it looks right on my laptop" is not an acceptance criterion.

My checklist would be short:

  • Store event instants in UTC.
  • Store a location-based IANA zone, such as America/Vancouver, whenever a person sets a future local-time rule.
  • Update the time-zone data in every deployment surface.
  • Create fixtures around the effective date for recurring jobs, reports, reminders and calendar events.
  • Recalculate future occurrences and review the changes before moving people's appointments quietly.

Mexico ended seasonal clock changes in most of the country in 2022 but kept them for many northern border municipalities. Cuba will remain on UTC-4 through November 2027. The EU is still changing clocks while its proposal to stop has no final decision. Time-zone change is local policy distributed globally through software. There is no single DST setting waiting to save us.

The annual ritual may be fading, but civil time is still a dependency with releases, compatibility work and regression tests. Treat it like one.
