Does Google Penalise AI-Written Content? What the Policies Say

Short answer: no, Google doesn't penalise content because AI wrote it. Its position since February 2023 is that it rewards helpful content however it's produced, and it acts against content made mainly to manipulate rankings, including large numbers of low-value generated pages. This guide goes through what that means in practice for a small business using an AI writer.

I separate Google's own statements from interpretation throughout. The February 2023 post set the test: quality and purpose, not production method. The maintained guidance page was updated on October 1, 2026 to stress that AI output must be manually fact-checked before publishing, and that this includes titles, meta descriptions, structured data and alt text. Helpful-content signals have been part of core ranking since March 2024, so there's no single classifier to "get hit by" anymore.

The spam policies that catch AI misuse are about behaviour: scaled content abuse, site reputation abuse and expired domain abuse. For a small business the real risk isn't one AI-assisted post; it's the template play of hundreds of near-identical pages. I also summarise what the Search Quality Rater Guidelines added about AI, and what Google says about disclosure and bylines.

Then a safe workflow: start from real customer questions, feed the model your own facts, fact-check every claim, add first-hand experience, review the metadata, sign it with a real author and prune pages that add nothing. I close with what Google has said, what it hasn't, and common opinion.

Key takeaways

  • Google judges helpfulness and intent, not the writing tool
  • Since October 2026 Google explicitly asks for fact-checking all AI output
  • Scaled, low-value page generation is the real risk
  • Review titles, descriptions, schema and alt text too
  • Add first-hand experience and a real author
