On 7 May 2026, FAQ rich results disappeared from Google Search. Not for some sites. For all of them.

Yet checklists, plugins and "AEO audits" still promise that FAQPage markup gets you into the answer box, or makes ChatGPT quote you. I wrote some of those lines myself, a year ago. Here is what is true now.

The timeline

Date What happened
Aug 2023 FAQ rich results limited to well-known government and health sites
7 May 2026 FAQ rich results gone from Google Search for everyone
Jun 2026 FAQ report, search appearance and Rich Results Test support removed from Search Console
Aug 2026 FAQ support removed from the Search Console API

John Mueller's comment was blunt: for most sites nothing changes, because the markup was already ignored.

What FAQPage still does

  • It is valid schema.org. Leaving it on a page does no harm, Google says.
  • Other parsers can read it. Nobody publishes how much they use it.
  • Visible Q&A is still useful. Real answers to real questions are easy for people and machines to quote — with or without markup.

What it no longer does

  • No FAQ result in Google.
  • No FAQ testing in Search Console.
  • No proven effect on AI citations. I looked. There is no published evidence that FAQPage markup makes ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google's AI features cite a page.

What to do on a store

  1. Keep FAQPage where the Q&A is visible and real: shipping, returns, sizes.
  2. Remove it where it was added only for Google — hidden FAQs, filler questions.
  3. Spend the time on schema that still matters: Product with offers.availability, shipping, return policy, and a consistent @id graph.
  4. Fix old promises in your own docs.

In my own audit tool, the FAQ check now has the lowest weight of all 20 signals. A missing FAQPage can never fail a store on critical severity.

Do you still see agencies selling FAQ schema as an AI visibility fix?
