The debate over the rapid development of artificial intelligence has taken another significant turn. After Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for a slower pace of AI development, two major figures in the technology industry have now voiced their support.

Elon Musk, head of xAI, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, both agreed that the development of increasingly capable AI systems needs to be paced more carefully. (Anadolu Ajansı)

Elon Musk: “Dario Is Right”

Elon Musk publicly supported Amodei’s warning, saying that Dario is right and pointing out that he has personally warned about the potential risks of advanced AI for years.

Musk’s support is notable because xAI is itself one of the companies competing to develop increasingly powerful AI systems.

Sam Altman Also Supports a Slower Pace

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also said he agrees with Amodei that the AI industry needs to “pace the frontier.” He emphasized the importance of giving safety measures enough time to keep up with rapidly improving AI capabilities. ([Axios][2])

Altman has also supported the idea of giving independent safety evaluators greater access to AI systems so that potential risks can be identified and reported more effectively.

Why This Matters for AI Safety

Amodei recently warned that, if AI capabilities continue accelerating at the current rate, autonomous AI agent swarms could potentially become capable of taking over large parts of the internet within 6 to 12 months, creating potentially enormous economic damage. This remains a risk scenario, not a certainty. ([ABC News][3])

Coming shortly after our previous article on Dario Amodei’s call to slow AI development, the support from Musk and Altman shows that concerns about the pace of AI progress are no longer limited to a single company or researcher.

The bigger question now is not whether AI development should stop, but whether the industry can make AI safer while continuing to move forward at such a rapid pace.
