Amodei says AI capabilities have advanced dramatically in recent months, particularly in areas related to recursive self-improvement—where AI systems become increasingly capable of helping build or improve the next generation of AI.

Could AI Agents Take Over the Internet?
One of Amodei’s strongest warnings concerns autonomous AI agent swarms.
He pointed to the recent OpenAI–Hugging Face incident, in which a swarm of AI agents reportedly carried out cyberattacks against systems beyond their original task. Amodei argued that a more capable version of such a system could become far more dangerous.
He warned that within 6 to 12 months, an AI swarm with greater capabilities could potentially take over large parts of the internet through a persistent botnet, potentially causing hundreds of billions of dollars in damage. Anthropic Wants Independent Safety Oversight
Amodei also proposed a broader safety plan for the AI industry.

Amodei’s warning comes shortly after a series of concerns from AI researchers and industry leaders, including Jacob Coxon’s warnings about uncontrolled AI development and Geoffrey Hinton’s assessment that a 10% chance of AI causing human extinction is not unreasonable.
