Artificial intelligence is advancing at an extraordinary pace. While AI is creating new opportunities across software development, mathematics, research and cybersecurity, concerns about its long-term safety are becoming increasingly serious.

A recent warning from Jacob Coxon, a former researcher associated with Anthropic, has renewed discussion about whether increasingly capable AI systems could eventually become difficult for humans to control.

Coxon reportedly decided to leave his position after becoming increasingly concerned about the direction and speed of AI development.

According to his statements, major AI companies are competing intensely to avoid falling behind in the race toward increasingly capable systems. His concern is that this competition could eventually push AI development beyond the level of human control.

He argued that the situation may sound like science fiction, but recent developments in AI make some of these scenarios increasingly difficult to dismiss.

The Growing Concern Around AI Agents

One of the examples discussed by Coxon involves AI agents performing increasingly autonomous tasks.

He pointed to recent cybersecurity incidents involving AI agents that were able to interact with third-party infrastructure and carry out sophisticated actions with limited human involvement.

His concern is not simply that AI can perform these tasks today, but that future systems could become significantly more capable.

If AI agents eventually gain greater autonomy, access to important infrastructure, and the ability to perform complex operations independently, the potential consequences could become much more serious.

AI Is Advancing Rapidly in Coding and Mathematics

Coxon also highlighted the speed at which AI capabilities are improving in areas such as coding and mathematics.

The basic idea is that an AI system could be given the task of improving AI research itself. If a sufficiently capable system could repeatedly improve its own capabilities or contribute to the development of even more capable systems, this could potentially create a rapid cycle of improvement.

Coxon described this possibility as an “intelligence explosion” — a scenario in which AI systems become increasingly capable with decreasing levels of direct human involvement.

The concern is that such a system could eventually become far more intelligent than humans, making control and alignment significantly more difficult.

Anthropic’s Perspective on the Risk

Anthropic’s Alignment Science Lead, Evan Hubinger, has also discussed the possibility of extreme AI risks. Hubinger has publicly stated that he considers the probability of AI causing human extinction within the next decade to be above 10%.

However, the concern is primarily about future highly capable systems rather than claiming that today's AI models are already capable of causing human extinction.

The distinction is important: the debate is largely about what could happen if AI systems become substantially more autonomous, capable, and capable of improving AI research itself.

Why Is This Conversation Becoming More Important?

Coxon believes that people are beginning to recognize that AI development is not simply hype.

The rapid progress in coding, mathematics, autonomous agents, and cybersecurity has made the capabilities of modern AI systems increasingly visible.

As these systems become more capable, the central question is no longer only “What can AI do?”

It is also:

“How do we make sure increasingly capable AI remains aligned with human goals and under meaningful human control?”

AI development is moving quickly and understanding its capabilities, limitations and risks will become increasingly important.

The future of AI may bring extraordinary benefits — but ensuring that increasingly powerful systems remain safe, controllable and aligned with human interests may be one of the most important challenges of the coming decade.
