What is The Tool Money Lab?

The Tool Money Lab is an independent software research and comparison platform built to help people make better decisions about the software they use.

We research and evaluate tools across AI, SaaS, privacy and security, productivity, business software, finance technology, developer tools and gaming performance.

But the interesting part for us has been the infrastructure behind the publication.

As the platform grew from a relatively small collection of reviews into more than 1,000 URLs, we found that conventional page-by-page publishing stopped making sense. Reviews, comparisons, categories, brands, affiliate relationships, internal links, structured data and evidence all needed to behave as parts of one system.

What we built

The platform uses structured product data to connect:

  • software reviews
  • product comparisons
  • category and buying guides
  • brand information
  • affiliate relationships
  • internal linking
  • structured data and schema
  • editorial evidence
  • technical research
  • quality-control checks

The objective is to maintain a consistent underlying representation of a product rather than independently recreating the same information across dozens of pages.

Why we built it this way

Scaling a publishing platform creates some surprisingly software-like problems.

A product may appear in a review, several comparisons, a category page, technical guides and recommendation pages. If pricing, URLs, affiliate relationships or product information change, maintaining each page manually becomes increasingly fragile.

We therefore started treating publishing infrastructure more like a software system: structured data, reusable components, validation and centralized rules.

That approach has allowed The Tool Money Lab to grow to more than 1,000 pages while keeping the underlying architecture manageable.

Evidence-driven software research

We're also experimenting with how software research should work in an AI-search environment.

Rather than optimizing only for traditional search rankings, we're building around evidence, transparent methodology, structured information and clearly attributable research.

We're tracking how that information is discovered and cited across traditional search engines and AI systems as the two increasingly converge.

Built in public

We document some of the engineering lessons behind The Tool Money Lab publicly, including the systems we've built for affiliate infrastructure, structured publishing, automation and large-scale content architecture.

The platform is actively maintained and continues to evolve as we learn what works — and what breaks — when a software research publication grows beyond a few hundred pages.
