When I began, I made the mistake of thinking I needed Kali Linux, ten different scanners, and a whole hacker setup on day one. You don't. Start simple, understand what each tool does, then build up from there.
Here's a beginner-friendly toolkit to get you started 👇
1. Password Managers
Before anything else, fix your passwords.
- Bitwarden or KeePass (free, beginner-friendly)
- Generate strong, unique passwords for every account
- Stop reusing the same password everywhere
Tip: This alone protects you more than most "advanced" tools ever will.
2. Virtual Machines (VMs)
You need a safe space to practice without breaking your own laptop.
- VirtualBox or VMware (both free)
- Set up a test environment before touching real tools
- This is where you'll run things like Kali Linux later
Tip: Never practice hacking tools directly on your main OS. Sandbox everything.
3. Network Scanning Basics
Once you're comfortable, start understanding networks.
- Wireshark — see what's actually happening on a network
- Nmap — scan and map out devices/ports
Tip: Don't worry about mastering these immediately. Just get familiar with opening them and seeing what they show you.
4. Browser Security Extras
Simple, everyday protection:
- HTTPS Everywhere / built-in browser HTTPS enforcement
- uBlock Origin (blocks a lot of malicious ads/trackers)
- A VPN for public wifi
Tip: These are things you can start using today, no technical skill required.
5. Learning Platforms (Not Tools, But Just as Important)
- TryHackMe — beginner-friendly, gamified learning
- Hack The Box — once you're a bit more confident
Tip: These platforms let you practice everything above in a legal, safe environment.
A Quick Reminder
You don't need every tool, and you definitely don't need to be an expert on all of them at once. Pick one, get comfortable, then move to the next. That's literally how I'm still doing it.
