How to Add Stripe Checkout to a Custom PHP Website (No Plugins)

I’m Jacob Campbell, and you don’t need WooCommerce or a pile of plugins to take payments — plain PHP and Stripe Checkout do it cleanly. Stripe hosts the secure payment page, handles card validation and 100+ payment methods, and hands you back a verified result. Your PHP just creates a session and listens for a webhook. Here’s how the flow works end to end and why the no-plugin approach is leaner and safer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I take payments in PHP without WooCommerce?
Yes. Stripe Checkout needs only the Stripe PHP library: create a Checkout Session, redirect to Stripe’s hosted page, and confirm via webhook.
What is a Checkout Session?
A server-created object that returns a URL to Stripe’s hosted payment page, where Stripe securely collects and validates the payment.
Why use webhooks for fulfilment?
Because customers can close the tab before the redirect. The checkout.session.completed webhook reliably confirms payment regardless of what the browser does.
Is a no-plugin checkout secure?
Yes — Stripe hosts the card entry and you verify webhook signatures. There is less code and a smaller attack surface than a full e-commerce plugin.
Does Stripe Checkout support subscriptions?
Yes. Set the session mode to subscription to take recurring payments with the same hosted flow.
