Is AI giving more power to hackers/ attackers than to developers?

Last week, I wrote about Anthropic’s most advanced model - Mythos Preview - https://lnkd.in/gw9RzATj

This week, Anthropic made a rare move of holding it back

Not because it isn’t ready… but because it may be too capable.

Specifically, discovering security flaws at a scale that could be dangerous in the wrong hands.

Let that sink in.

For years, cybersecurity has been a constant tug-of-war:

Defenders patch vulnerabilities

Attackers find new ones

But AI changes the pace

Now imagine attackers equipped with AI that can:

  • Scan massive codebases in seconds

  • Identify hidden vulnerabilities

  • Combine them into sophisticated attack chains

That’s not incremental change, that’s a capability leap.

Why experts are worried

Security leaders are increasingly warning about a scenario “Vulnpocalypse” - a world where:

  • Cyberattacks become faster, cheaper, and more scalable

  • Critical infrastructure (banks, hospitals, transport systems) becomes more exposed

Even less-skilled attackers gain access to advanced capabilities

Within 6–12 months, similar tools could be widely available globally.

We should expect:

Larger, more frequent system outages

Cascading failures across industries (think cloud, airlines, finance)

What this means for businesses and leaders

This isn’t just a cybersecurity issue, it’s a strategic risk.

Curious to hear your take:

Are we underestimating how AI will help attackers?

If not, why are we not talking more about it?
