In my last post, I shared how I’m getting into cybersecurity and the foundation that changed how I see it the CIA triad: confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
As I keep learning, I’m realizing that cybersecurity isn’t just a concept. It’s made up of key elements that work together to actually protect systems, data, and people. Today, I’m sharing what I’ve learned so far simply and honestly, from a beginner’s point of view.
1. People Matter More Than We Think
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is that humans are often the weakest link.
Phishing emails, weak passwords, social engineering most attacks succeed because of human behavior, not broken code.
That’s why awareness, training, and mindset are just as important as technical tools.
Tip:
Always question unexpected emails, links, or requests even if they look “official.”
2. Technology Is the Shield
This is the part most people think of first firewalls, antivirus software, encryption, secure systems. These tools help enforce confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
But I’ve learned that tools alone are not enough. If they’re misconfigured or ignored, they fail.
Tip:
Learn why a security tool exists, not just how to use it.
3. Processes Keep Everything Together
Processes are the rules and procedures that guide how security is handled things like backups, access control, incident response, and updates.
Without processes, even good tools and smart people can make costly mistakes.
Tip:
Consistency beats complexity. Simple, well-followed processes go a long way.
Encouragement for Fellow Beginners
I’m still learning, still asking questions, and still making mistakes and that’s okay. Cybersecurity isn’t about knowing everything at once. It’s about building awareness, habits, and confidence over time.
If you’re on this journey too, don’t feel behind. You’re exactly where you need to be learning.
What’s Coming Next
In my next post, I’ll dive deeper into one core area of cybersecurity and share practical lessons, beginner tips, and how I’m applying what I learn step by step.
This journey is ongoing and I’m choosing to learn in public, stay curious, and grow consistently.
Stay tuned. We’re just getting started
